Otherwise, open it with Internet explorer, Firefox, Netscape or a graphics editor. A .gif suffix means "Graphics Interchange Format". It's most likely a picture. Do you know who sent it to you? If so, do you know them well enough to trust that it isn't a virus? If not, then don't open it!
